Commenting on the news that Richard Lochhead has written to all eligible skippers after Scotland's catch quotas was extended last week, Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
"While it is recognised within the industry that catch quotas agreed last week do have potential for tackling discards, they are by no means the silver bullet.
"The industry has made it abundantly clear that without further changes to the scheme and its close involvement in any wider extension, catch quotas have the potential to be a suicide bill.
"Last week the Cabinet Secretary was criticised by Scottish fishing leaders in engaging in spin regarding catch quotas. The real danger is that Mr Lochhead will begin to believe his own hype.
