Commenting on official figures showing that the number of students applying to Scottish universities is falling, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith said:
"The SNP has let down students, dumping them instead of the debt and we know that students are struggling to afford higher education at the moment. Potential students in Scotland seem to be getting this message loud and clear.
"The Scottish Government needs to be sure that there is no risk of a skills gap developing as a result of falling university applications. This is the last thing our economy needs as we fight to recover from this recession.
It's time for the Education Secretary to make real changes to support for students. A good start would be listening to Liberal Democrats and students and focusing on student hardship as a matter of urgency."
